German Post systemThe trade name for German Post is Deutshe Post DHL. It is known all over the world as the largest courier company. German post has its headquarters in Bonn, which is located in the banks of Rhine river in state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

It was founded in 1947 and underwent many changes of reforms. Initially in 1989 it was divided in three sub divisions.

It has its offices in more than 220 countries and territories around the world. Deutshe Post has more than 467,088 employees worldwide. It earned a revenue of about € 52.82 billion in the year 2011. The company’s main business started after its privatization. It started acquiring other business, which helped it expand and make more huge profits.

In 1996, the company underwent a process of reorganization and modernization, which also involved greater investments in technology and logistics. This was deemed necessary to speed up the mailing process making fast delivery of letters and parcels in the country. The investment and reforms in 33-parcel centre around the country yielded very good results.

Another investment that took the German post a litter higher on the ladder of success was the installation of modern technology in the mail centers in the year 1998. The network increased the number of its production centers to 83.

By the end of year 2000, the company went public making it the third world’s largest public offering. The acquisition of DHL international was on its way from 1998. Initially it consisted of only 25 percent shares and it increased to 75 percent in the year 2002. By December 2002 it had acquired increased shares in international courier and 100 percent shares in express business.

The company has four corporate divisions depending upon the kind of services it provides. For example; mailing services, Express, Freight/forwarding and Supply chains. The mailing division is responsible for delivering over 70 million of letters in the country. This division is subdivided in other business units. There are Mail communication (handles domestic and international mail), Press services (handles distribution of print products), Retail outlets, Dialogue Marketing (provides direct marketing services), Parcel Germany (handles domestic, non-express parcel service) and Global Mail (handles international and domestic mail).

Its mailing service also offers a unique facility called Garagenvertrag (meaning garage agreement) which means that the postman can leave the packets or parcels in garage if the addressee is not home to save him the hassle of going to the post office for collecting it.

The Express division, which works under the DHL brand is responsible for transporting courier and parcel shipments through air and ground transport, whereas the forwarding and freight division transports through sea, air, rail and road. Supply chain, also known as corporate information solutions, provides tailor-made solutions and contract logistics to customers.
